SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol used to connect to a server and execute various tasks through a command line. The protocol is used by many expert users, for the reason that the info transmitted over it is encrypted, so it can't be intercepted on the way by a third party. SSH access may be used for lots of things based on the type of web hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for example, SSH is one of the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file when the server allows for it. In case you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH could be used for pretty much anything - you can install software or restart certain services such as the web server or the database server that run on the machine. SSH is used primarily with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients that enable you to employ the protocol if your personal computer is running a different OS as well. The connection is made on TCP port 22 by default and the remote web server always listens for incoming connections on that port though a lot of service providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Website Hosting

If you have a website hosting account with us and you want to manage your content remotely via SSH, you may obtain SSH access to the account using your Hepsia Control Panel. If your package deal doesn't come with this feature as standard, you can add it with several clicks via the Upgrades menu. Within the SSH section of the CP, you shall see the host, the port number and the username that you need to use when you connect to the account. You may also pick what password you would want to use, as it doesn't need to be the same as the one for the account. We've prepared a number of Help articles in which you can easily find each of the commands that you'll be able to use with a shared hosting package, along with examples of how they are used. Additionally, if SSH access is allowed for your account, you'll be able to establish a Secure FTP (SFTP) connection via a standard client like FileZilla, for example.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is available as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server plans, while with others you will be able to include it through the hosting CP if necessary - even just for the current month. Either way, you could activate and de-activate the function with one click via the SSH section of the CP. In the same location, you will discover the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You will also find a box in which you can type the password which you want to use, since it does not have to be the same as the one you use to log into the CP. For better protection, you can also change it as often as you require. The full list of the commands that can be executed in a semi-dedicated account is supplied in our Knowledge Base, alongside the syntax and several examples. An extra feature after SSH access is activated will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client that supports this type of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Hosting

If you buy a new virtual private server from us, it will come with full root access and you'll be able to connect to the server and to handle everything via an SSH console. The function comes as standard with all packages, so you will not have to allow or upgrade anything. Your website hosting server will be set up soon after you buy it and the moment you receive the Welcome e-mail with the login info, you may connect using the server’s main IP address and begin working. Given that the VPS is a software emulation of a dedicated server and is separated from the other accounts on the physical machine, there won't be any restrictions in terms of the commands that you can use. You will have full root access, so that you could set up and run any app that can work on a Linux web server, manage files, folders and databases or start/stop/reboot the whole machine or any software running on it.
